Lot no. 48
GAULLE Charles de.
2 L. A. S., [Rosenberg-Kronach camp] 5 and 22 August 1917, to his mother Jeanne de Gaulle in Paris; 6 pages pet. in-8 (camp censorship stamp) with envelope (postmarks and postmarks), and 1 page in-12 of a Postkarte with address on verso.
Interesting coded letter sent to his mother in preparation for his future escape.
5 August. He begins his letter by wishing his "dearest Mother" a happy birthday, then goes on to talk about Pierre's career and predicts that "he will have plenty of time to shine as he wishes"...
He tells of his transfer to his new place of incarceration (Rosenberg-Kronach camp): "I'm not unhappy to have changed camp, although I do miss the excellent comrades I had in Ingolstadt. But here I am much better housed - in any case we are in real rooms. Your parcels are always welcome. I would even say that they are more and more welcome. You probably know that instead of bread I now get some sort of biscuit from Switzerland. They are very good. I think that between now and winter we should give up home-cooked tins of meat altogether, as they don't arrive in good condition at this time of year"...
The last part of the letter, seemingly banal, contains a number of underlined words, forming a code for sending civilian clothes in preparation for an escape: "Here we are again in the rain, which is keeping us locked up together. I'm writing to you after sewing on buttons for an hour... I'd be a civilian - or almost one - if it weren't for the news you send me! Sometimes I have to look at my stripes to remember that I'm in uniform. I've received the piping. In the next parcel, send me buttons of all kinds, and also some sewing kit. After all, winter is three months away! What will happen to us then? Just a question of an overcoat... You can send me a pair of trousers first. Then, at the same time, a simple dinner jacket or waistcoat; but don't let there be anything civil about it... You know that, apart from acting, alas! I keep my complete principles. As for my brothers, I am very happy with the news I received from them yesterday. Please send them both a thousand thoughts for me.
22nd August. After mentioning the weather and his family's good health, the postscript refers to the previous letter and his desire to escape: "As for the suit and overcoat, it goes without saying that it is not for a few weeks yet. I am writing to you in Paris, not knowing exactly when my card will arrive.
