The day after the Liberation of Paris. 27th August. "My dear little wife, I saw Philippe who is perfectly well and has fought very well and is still fighting. Everything is going very well. Yesterday there was an incredible demonstration. It ended at Notre-Dame with a sort of shooting which was just a tartarinade. There are a lot of armed people here who, heated up by the previous fighting, fire towards the roofs at any opportunity. The first shot set off a general backlash of sparrows. It doesn't last. I'm at the Ministry of War, Rue St Dominique. But it's only temporary. When you come, we'll take a hotel with a garden near the Bois de Boulogne and I'll have my offices elsewhere. 31st August. "Things continue to work out satisfactorily here. Naturally, certain elements have tried to take advantage of the inevitable confusion at the beginning, and if need be to create it, in order to gain the upper hand. But this cannot and could not have had much effect, because the public mind is magnificent and quite properly oriented. Philippe came to dinner with me last night, then returned to his regiment at Le Bourget after helping to take it. They are now at rest and have earned it. They fought hard in Alençon, then Argentan, then south of Paris (Antony - Porte d'Orléans) to enter the city, then Paris (École Militaire, Palais-Bourbon, Rue Royale, Luxembourg, Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est) where the enemy was entrenched. After that it wasn't over, as they had to retake St Denis, Le Bourget, Stains, etc. Philippe behaved perfectly. We can be proud of him. LNC, II, p. 554 and 556. An L. A.
