"Your letter of the 5th asks me, with a shadow of concern, for news of my health: it is excellent. As for having my photograph taken, I certainly could, but in my present lamentable situation I absolutely refuse to do so. Yes, we have a French priest here who acts as chaplain"... 21 March. After expressing his concern at not having any news of his sister Marie-Agnès, he goes on to talk about his daily life as a prisoner: "Winter is definitely over. The most comforting thing about our situation is the excellent camaraderie that reigns among us, which prevents us from ever being alone, even morally. We also have a fairly well-stocked library. [...] In Fort 9, we have yards big enough for sports. He goes on to talk about the food and personal effects sent by his mother: "Your parcels arrive regularly, my dearest Mum, including your bread which is excellent. The shoes have arrived and fit me very well. I repeat that I don't care whether I receive home-made tins or others: I thought it would be cheaper. Thank you also for your cigarettes. Once again, don't worry in any way about my health, which is very good. Besides, my fate is of no interest since I am good for nothing. The tools he needed to escape were hidden in five rigged tins.
