Captain de Gaulle escaped from the Rosenberg camp on 15 October, only to be recaptured ten days later. He was then sentenced to sixty days' arrest and three weeks' imprisonment in Passau military prison. On 30 October, he tried to escape again, but was immediately recaptured. Further on, he admits to having "concerns about you, my dearest Mama, and also about Papa. I would like to be sure that you are tiring yourself physically and morally as little as possible, and that you are giving yourself more rest because of this than in peacetime. I think with a heavy heart that you are going to spend this winter quite alone at home"... The last part of the letter contains words underlined in pencil; this is probably a code for sending items needed for a future escape: "Here we are again, from what I can see, preoccupied with new examinations in the family. Our Pierre," you write to me, "is working a lot and you're afraid he's getting more tired, which hardly surprises me, as I know from experience how difficult it is to pass this exam. One day, no doubt, as his application and self-confidence grow with success, he will be able to hope to really lead the train. He is now on his guard against overwork and I hope he will not be caught out. In your letter of 27 October you worried about the packet of noodles, but my card sent on 19 November will tell you that it has been saved. On the other hand, I am still waiting for the uniform I announced... 9 December. "We continue to have no regular news from you and no parcels. I have, however, received from M.A. a note dated 25 November in which she tells me that little Michel has had to undergo a further operation by the surgeon and a note dated 28 in which she tells me that all is now well with the dear baby." He also asks his parents to send 100 Marks "calculated on the day's exchange, as I borrowed them from the Captain for what you know [probably his escape] and I am separated from him."
