Lot no. 160
GAULLE Charles de. 2 L. A. S., [London], 18 and 29 December 1940, to his son Philippe de Gaulle (at the Naval School in Portsmouth); 2 pages in-4 each headed Le Général de Gaulle, the 2nd with the address 4, Carlton Gardens. Letters from London to his son, on Pétain and Vichy. 18 December. "My dear Philippe, [...] Your father certainly hasn't forgotten you and I often think of the courageous and interesting life you have led. I believe that the Pétain-Vichy equivocation is disappearing, even for the blind. Soon the ghosts and dreams will have disappeared and it will be seen everywhere, even in England (!), that between the real France and us 'Gaullists' there is only the enemy. Then, no doubt, it will be easier for us to do what we have to do, which is to fight for our country"... 29 December. "My dear Philippe, I thought a lot about you, my son of whom I am proud, on your 19th birthday. I had many wishes for you and you can imagine how these wishes are summed up in the immense drama we are living through. I think that everything is going well at the École Navale and that your boat is now sailing at its own speed. [...] The people of Vichy are choosing between crime and salvation. According to my information, French opinion and even Pétain's men have made progress in the right direction in recent weeks. But as I know them, fallible characters at heart and moreover very compromised by their previous abandonments, I would be surprised if they adopted a truly national attitude and entered the war. But that's the whole point"... LNC, I, p. 1109 and 1116.
