Lot no. 165
GAULLE Charles de. 2 L. A. S., [London], 6 July and 31 October 1942, to his son Philippe de Gaulle (midshipman); 2 pages in-4 and 2 pages in-8 headed Le Général de Gaulle 4, Carlton Gardens, envelope for the 1st letter (in which the signature has been cut out). 6 July. "My dear Philippe, With all my heart I congratulate you on having been given command of a warship. As small as it is, it is important and it is a part of the French force. I'm sure you'll command her as she should be commanded, with decision, courage and care. Her fate and that of her brave crew are your responsibility. The war continues to give us no cause for rejoicing. However, I still believe that, if the Germans do not win any really decisive successes this year against the Russians and in the East, their account is good for next year. In any case, spirits in France are improving all the time, despite the suffering, or perhaps because of it"... 31st October. "My inspection of the Navy will continue next month. I am generally satisfied with what I see. There is definite and steady progress. What is needed is for everything to become not only more 'marine', but also more 'military'. We hope to achieve this for Madagascar in the near future. But naturally we want France to be at home there"... LNC, II, p. 109 and 207.
