Lot no. 54
GAULLE Charles de. 2 L. A. S., Wülzburg 20 and 30 June 1918, to his mother Jeanne de Gaulle in La Ligerie (Dordogne); 1 page in-12 of a postcard with address on the back, and 4 pages in-8 with envelope (postmarks). About the exchange of prisoners, and a coded letter about a new escape. 20 June. He has no news of his parents. "I hope that our dear Pierre is recovering quickly and well from his accident in the line of duty. As far as I'm concerned, I'm full of hope and confidence, both in general and in my particular case"... 30 June. In this coded letter, the captain asks his parents for fake personal effects with a view to a future escape: "I feel obliged to ask you, my dearest Mother, for a jacket and trousers exactly like those you sent me in April from La Belle Jardinière. This will serve as a reserve for the next few months. He mentions these hypothetical prisoner exchanges once again: "You seem to have some confidence in the exchanges. All I can tell you is that they have not started and there is no question of them starting"... He ends his letter with underlining: "Here we are again, back in the long days when we lived mainly in the yard. At least the air here is good because of the altitude. So I breathe it, and from a physical point of view, it's the best way I have of helping myself. Believe me, I'm determined to get to France one day in good shape. To succeed, I'm saving my resources like a bankrupt. As for my career, there will still be time to take sides. LNC, I, p. 414 to 416.
