Evocation of the wars of the Revolution and the Empire, in dialogue form. These three dialogues stem from the historical project Le Soldat à travers les âges, which de Gaulle was to write at the request of Marshal Pétain. Some of the themes of Le Flambeau will be found in La France et son armée. Captain de Gaulle published the first two dialogues under his own name in the Revue militaire française of March and April 1927; the third was published posthumously. A. 2 autograph manuscripts of dialogue III between Canrobert and Captain Coignet, discussing the military spirit. - First draft, extensively crossed out and corrected (10 p.). - Cleaned up with a few erasures and corrections, located "(Au mois d'Août 1826, à Auxerre)". Let us quote Canrobert's conclusion, which explains the title: "You, the grognards, are passing the torch to us, as others passed it to you, a short time ago. Of course, it will burn less brightly in our barracks than in the open air of your campaigns. All the same, we'll keep it going! B. Typescript of dialogue II between Sergeant Fricasse and the grenadier (and future captain) Coignet, 16 June 1800 in Alexandrie de Lombardie. The typescript (9 p.) contains numerous erasures and corrections, as well as passages that have been crossed out (and 2 annotations in Henri de Gaulle's hand). On page 3, a long reply by Fricasse is added on a check mark: "I have known: Jourdan, who left as a battalion commander and became commander-in-chief a year later; Moreau, who came out of a notary's office to fight and whose reputation is said to cast a shadow over Bonaparte; Marceau, a private who became a general in two years, killed in action; Kléber, a former officer, now in Egypt: With the plague, the Turks and the English, will he not have the fate of his brave comrade Desaix, whose death we mourn? These leaders have brought the military virtues of ancient times into republican fashion. The two final lines have been crossed out and replaced by a final sentence from Fricasse. At the bottom of the 1st page, Henri de Gaulle has added a historical note on the siege of Genoa. C. 2 complete typescripts of Le Flambeau, in 3 parts. - On the first (29 p.), de Gaulle has added 2 autograph notes concerning Thouvenin and Captain Coignet; this first version of the 3rd tableau, set in Bourges on 1 January 1816, features Coignet and Bugeaud. - 2 typescripts of 30 p. with the Coignet-Canrobert version of the 3rd tableau, one with a few autograph corrections.
