When I read in some newspaper the other day that prisoners who had returned to France were described as 'revenants', I found it pitifully accurate. [...] You're offering to send me books! Alas! I would like you to know - and do you? - the material conditions under which I am here to work, and have never ceased to be. And even if those conditions were radically different! Working on what? To work for what?... To work, you have to have a goal. And what purpose could I possibly have? My career, you may ask? But, if I can't fight again by the end of the war, will I stay in the army? and what mediocre future will there be for me? 3 years, 4 years of war that I won't have seen, maybe more! To have any future in the career, as far as officers of my age who have any ambition are concerned, the first, indispensable condition will be to have been in the campaign, to have, as it changed shape, learned to judge it, formed his reasoning, tempered his character and his authority. From a military point of view, I have no illusions, I too will only be a 'returnee'"... 10th September.
