Lot no. 57
GAULLE Charles de.
3 L. A. S., 1, 10 and 30 September 1918, to his mother Jeanne de Gaulle in La Ligerie (Dordogne); 4 pages in-8 headed Kriegsgefangener Offiziergefangenlager Wülzburg with envelope, and 2 on postcard (1 p. in-12 with address on back, postmarks and postmarks).
On his conditions of detention, and a pessimistic account of his career after the war.
1 September. "I don't need to tell you that nothing's happening for me... I'm buried alive. When I read in some newspaper the other day that prisoners who had returned to France were described as 'revenants', I found it pitifully accurate. [...] You're offering to send me books! Alas! I would like you to know - and do you? - the material conditions under which I am here to work, and have never ceased to be. And even if those conditions were radically different! Working on what? To work for what?... To work, you have to have a goal. And what purpose could I possibly have? My career, you may ask? But, if I can't fight again by the end of the war, will I stay in the army? and what mediocre future will there be for me? 3 years, 4 years of war that I won't have seen, maybe more! To have any future in the career, as far as officers of my age who have any ambition are concerned, the first, indispensable condition will be to have been in the campaign, to have, as it changed shape, learned to judge it, formed his reasoning, tempered his character and his authority. From a military point of view, I have no illusions, I too will only be a 'returnee'"...
10th September. After mentioning his sister Marie-Agnès: "In spite of the news and what you have written to me, I still think that our business will not be completely successful for some time to come"...
30 September. "I am here [in Magdeburg] for a few days and do not find it any worse than elsewhere. I shall probably return to Wülzburg at the beginning of next week. In any case, do not change the address of my letters or parcels, and continue to send them to me in Wülzburg. Here, from morning to night, we have only one thought in mind: you know what it is, and it is comforting". [...]
