I will probably stay here until further notice. [...] I don't need to tell you that my general view has not changed one bit. From my particular point of view it is clearer than ever. 17 April. After worrying about the health of his parents and relatives and reassuring them about his own, he spoke with admiration about the commitment of one of his cousins, Maillot, a young volunteer for the infantry: "What you have told me about Joseph's resolution and the selfless way in which he has carried it out, proves to me his high moral standards. I say this very simply, but with all my emotional conviction; after all the experience I have accumulated, a young man who, without any obligation, multiplies by a hundred the danger he is going to run, by a thousand the fatigue, the mud, the constraint, makes the most meritorious effort on himself, I think, that one can imagine. All the more so as in the infantry the glory of the soldier is not - as you know - measured by his tears"...
