Ingolstadt letterhead with envelope, and two on 1 page in-12 of a Feldpostkarte with address on back. Letters from Ingolstatdt prison camp. 21 January. "I have nothing new to tell you about myself. I have finally received from you all the letters written in November and December. They tell me that Anne-Marie Kolb has died... what a terrible grief for her poor mother and sisters! This death will no doubt be sad for our dear Xavier, whom I think of so much... I can see that Pierre has taken the best path: I am happy and proud of him"... 6th February. He talks about his good conditions in captivity: "But on this subject as on all the others, I beg you, my dearest Mother, not to worry too much about what is happening to me. It is not at my age and with my very good health that a few weeks on a reduced menu can be of any importance, and the winter - which is coming to an end - is really not harsh enough for us to suffer seriously in the situation I am in. Of course, I'd much rather be cold for something like Xavier, Jacques, Pierre and my cousins...". And, on the subject of those who fight: "As the power of the means increases, the relative danger to which they are exposed increases greatly for the artillerymen. I hope at least that the glory does not diminish in proportion as it sometimes does...". February 26th. [Stamped on 28 July by the Germans without any indication of place, arrived at La Ligerie in the Dordogne on 31 July] "The time of my leave is still delayed due to fortuitous circumstances. It is impossible for me to give you an approximate date: first of all, the leave system would have to be re-established. But that is not the case at the moment. I send my love to you and Dad. He congratulates him on his son's "promotion to the Légion d'Honneur". One passage concerns Charles de Gaulle: "Charles is on his sixth escape attempt! He was taken back to Ingolstadt to a certain fort no. 9, which is specifically assigned to repeat offenders"...
