Lot no. 336
GAULLE Charles de. 3 L. A. S. (the 2nd "C."), 16 January, 25 May and 9 July 1967, to his son Captain Philippe de GAULLE (in Lorient); 2, 1 and a half and 2 pages in-8 on General de Gaulle's letterhead, envelope for the 3rd. 16 January. "My dear Philippe, While you are in command of the Suffren, my thoughts and my affectionate pride are and will be with you. Your ship is beautiful and good. What it may still leave to be desired is part of the test that comes with command and which I am sure you will overcome brilliantly. On the Navy side, I'm told that after a few 'tips' from the Americans and the work done by Matra, the masurkas should be working well towards the end of the year. 25th May. "On Monday I leave for Rome with your Mum. It's going to be quite a complicated trip. Then it's off to Poland! I hope that everything is going well for you and for the Suffren, although the weather is very bad"... 9th July. "My dear Philippe, you are now Commander of the Legion of Honour! I congratulate you warmly and affectionately. You are the first de Gaulle to be honoured with this rank. My father became an "officer" as a combatant. I myself never received the "cravate". You have every reason to be happy and proud of a dignity due to your war service and your subsequent risks and merits"... LNC, III, p. 861, 895 and 905.
