Lot no. 76
GAULLE Charles de.
3 L. A. S., Rembertov 27 January, 17 and 24 February 1920, to his mother Jeanne de GAULLE in Paris; 4 pages in-8 each, envelope of the 2nd enclosed.
About his military stay in Poland, the idea of a future marriage, and questions about his military career.
27 January. "My dear Mother, Winter is in full swing here, but we are not suffering too much, as we have managed to organise our heating and the cold is dry and the weather very fine.
Paul Deschanel's election as President surprised everyone: "Everyone thought from the Rhine to the Bug that as long as Clemenceau agreed to be elected, he could not fail to be elected. Besides, Deschanel's election does not sadden me. I think he has all the qualities needed for the job. As for a planned marriage: "I can say neither yes nor no, as I have no reason to lean in either direction. I want you to know that I'm going home as soon as my course is over; that is, by Easter at the latest, and that's the only time I'll be able to see and be seen, judge and be judged. Until then, I have no objection in principle to anything or anyone.
[...] In Poland I will have re-established my military status and I am now well on the way to preparing for the difficult exams I have in mind"...
17 February. "My dearest Mummy, the moment when I will see you again is approaching very seriously. [...] The other side of the coin, as far as returning to France is concerned, is the boredom of military life in France. [...] We move from garrison to garrison, and it is likely, for many reasons, that this state of affairs will continue until the end of the year. What I need is to find a post where I can work and prepare for the École de guerre in complete peace of mind. As I have already written to you, I am definitely not taking this year's competitive examination. Poland will not have been in vain for me. I will come back with excellent marks, and I have regained the taste and habit of work that had been somewhat dissipated by life since 1914! [The Poles are very confused about whether or not to make peace with the Russians. I say the Russians, because as far as Poland is concerned, the whole of Russia - or at least what is left of it - is in agreement with the Bolsheviks to crush it at the first opportunity. If peace is signed, it means a few months, perhaps a few years of peace for Poland. If not, it will mean battle in the spring and very probably the need for France to intervene by force"...
24th February. "The Poles are negotiating with Russia, but at the same time they are very afraid of an enemy offensive in the spring [...]. [...] The arrival of Marshal Foch is expected at any moment...
Last week General Henrys came to Rembertov. He attended one of my exercises. Afterwards he was kind enough to pay me high compliments and asked me about my intentions. I told him frankly that my intention was to leave Poland in April. He shouted loudly and formally asked me to stay, adding that I would be given every opportunity to prepare for the War College at my leisure. I took my leave and said I would think about it. [...] I have a relatively high-profile position here, which makes me known to a lot of people. It is regrettable in this respect that I am not yet old enough to be appointed chief of battalion, because I would very probably be given a choice that I would never have in France. Finally, France is no fun at the moment for the military.
