Assessment of his mission in Poland, and questions about his future. 4 March, to his father. "The course I am running finishes on 1 April. I therefore expect to return to France around 15 April, give or take a week, with probably a month's leave. I will leave Poland with, I can say, quite exceptional marks which have completely restored me to the military position that the odious captivity had taken away from me. If I were even a little older, I would stay here, certain of being promoted to battalion commander at my choice. But I can't think about that for at least two years and in these conditions, I no longer have any appreciable advantage to expect from this mission. As, on the other hand, it is becoming more and more difficult, and it threatens to become unpleasant very soon, I am returning home decidedly honoured by the insistence of my chiefs, and even by General Henrys himself, in inviting me to stay here. So what do I do now? Find a post that will give me as much peace of mind as possible for a year so that I can work towards the École de Guerre entrance exam in 1921. Obviously what would suit me best would be to be a professor (not an instructor) at Saint-Cyr. All the advantages would be there for me. Is that possible? I have no idea what Saint-Cyr is like today. And what conditions would I have to meet to become a teacher there? 24th March. "My dear Mother, The days go by very quickly now, and I can see that the time for my departure is very near. People here are making tireless and very flattering efforts to keep me at the Mission. But it is in vain. My mind is made up and I am determined not to return to Poland. Moreover, I shall leave with a clear conscience, because I really won't have wasted my time. Nearly two hundred Polish officers successively passed through my hands in the various courses where I served as an instructor, and lastly as director, and I think I taught them something. I also did my utmost to establish the best possible camaraderie between this young army and ours. And I can assure you that this is not easy. Influences hostile to France (especially Austrian ones) are very numerous here and particularly powerful in the army. What am I going to do when I get back? I don't know. 4th April.
