Greetings to his "dear Papa", very different from those of previous years: "At that time, everyone, yourself most of all, was trying to discern, through a heavy and bloody cloud, what the Fates of the Fatherland would be. Today that terrible anguish has disappeared. Victory has filled our hearts. But no one can experience its magnificent sweetness better than you. Your childhood had known no other memories than those of French glory, and suddenly the odious mourning of our abasement had enveloped your youth. Since then, in spite of time, in spite of disillusionment, in spite of weariness, the hope of witnessing the holy revenge has never ceased to be your first hope. How often your sons have thought of this during recent trials! Rembertov Officers' Course, 17 July. "My dearest Mother, We are very busy at present, for our Polish Officers' School is in operation, and it is a great deal of work to study, process and present all the matters we have to teach them. I must say, however, that our efforts are not in vain. Little by little the truth is coming out, and we are inculcating in this young army, without much difficulty, the doctrines and methods of our old victorious army. As far as I'm concerned, I'm learning a lot as I work, and all this will be of great use to me for the future examinations at the École de Guerre". He was delighted to learn of his brother Xavier's engagement and continued, on his own account: "You are inviting me to follow the same path. You know, my dearest Mama, that I am determined to do so. But for the moment, I'm just an exile. When I have finished the year's stay in Poland that I have resolved to complete, then I will look for nothing better. In your last letter you mention the name of my cousin Therese Kolb. I don't suppose you mean anything by it. However, since you mention her, I have no hesitation in telling you that she once made a deep impression on me. But it is years since I last saw her, and I cannot believe that she remembers my modest person in anything other than the most vague way. As far as I am concerned, I have kept a very special memory of her, that of a young girl who was indeed charming, as you say, and whose reserved intelligence and delicate finesse struck me very seriously"... He announced that he was "going to be made a Polish battalion commander at the beginning of next month", and asked his mother to send him some kepis and a fourragère... 19 July, to his mother. "I have just had the most unpleasant incident in the world. I have simply been burgled. Yesterday evening, on my way to dinner, I left my flat locked as usual and took my key with me. When I came back, I found my lock unscrewed. My card case containing two thousand-mark notes, which I had left as usual in the pocket of my best tunic, two pairs of shoes (fortunately in my misfortune I was wearing my boots) and almost all my clothes, as well as various objects of no great value, had disappeared without a trace", without any hope of finding anything [...] I am furious, humiliated and very embarrassed"...
