Lot no. 68
GAULLE Charles de.
3 L. A. S., Saint-Maixent 5, 10 and 12 March 1919, to his parents Henri and Jeanne de GAULLE in Paris; 2 pages in-8 (split repaired with scotch tape), 3 pages and a half in-8, 6 pages in-8 with its envelope.
About his Légion d'honneur and the role of the French army in Europe.
5 March. "My dearest Mummy, Uneventful return, which enabled me to take a trip to Poitiers, hampered moreover by driving rain". He asked Lieutenant Répessé
"if my proposal for the Legion of Honour had been passed on to the Regiment. According to what he wrote me, I have regained some hope. But what a long time it takes for the simplest things to happen!
10 March. "A comrade who had also applied for the Polish Army has just been officially informed that he has been appointed since 4 March by the Infantry Department of the Ministry of War. It's therefore likely that I've been appointed too, as all the postings must have been made together. In any case, none of them - not even his - has been officially published.
He concludes, on the subject of his brothers: "I'm surprised and annoyed by what you've written about Pierre's appointment. Has the matter been settled? Jacques had to go back to his classes at the École des Mines and reestablish the chain of time. It must seem rather strange to him to be a student again after four and a half hectic years in charge of men!
12 March. He thanks his "dear Papa" for having sent him "the Note from the Franco-Polish Mission [...] Things being what they are, I have no doubt that I will be appointed at any moment to join some Polish division in formation at Sillé-le-Guillaume. [...]
My opinion is that we are waiting for some kind of decision by the Allied Conference and an opportune moment to make these postings official - mine in particular. You will have read in the newspapers the recent statement in the House by the Under-Secretary of State for War, announcing the formation and maintenance in the East of a French army of 150,000 men, made up as far as possible of volunteers. He added: "The military role of the Army of the East is not over." On the other hand, there is a demand for officers to set up railway commissions in Central Europe, the Orient, etc. This means that our government intends to keep the supervision and probably the management of the railways in almost all of Europe for years to come. Finally, we are continuing to send people to Siberia and the Urals, and this time not via the United States, but via Suez. No one in our circles doubts any longer that a great expedition to Russia is being planned and prepared. The kind words we are currently showering on the Queen of Romania perhaps indicate that Romania - like Poland - will have to serve us in the operation as a place of arms and an auxiliary. As far as Germany is concerned, it seems quite clear that the policy of France and Clemenceau prevails among the Allies, and that it is a complete political, military and economic crushing that is going to be imposed on the odious vanquished. There is less doubt than ever that in order to sustain such a policy, it is not enough for us to have - and we do have - the largest army in the world; we also and above all need a considerable birth rate. Victory has come at the right time. I want to believe that the rest will come as a bonus"...
