He wrote to his "dearest Mother" on her birthday, expressing "the only wish that a Frenchman can make at the moment, which unites us all, despite exiles and perils, in the same will and the same certainty! He has been a prisoner since 10 August 1914 and I got to know him very well at Fort 9 and then here. He was the oldest officer in my room. [...] But he, too, does not despair that one day it will be understood on both sides that there is only one military truth as far as prisoner officers are concerned, and that is to exchange them so that they can fight again, and not end up demoralised and disgraced in inaction in Switzerland! As he had no news of his sister Marie-Agnès, he felt it was essential for her to join her parents: "As the war will, in my opinion, continue for literally years to come, I feel that her situation is in danger of becoming intolerable". He talks about his daily life: "You're asking me to give you details of the Wülzburg camp. All in all, it's like all camps, neither better nor worse. However, you know that for the past few weeks we have been able to go for walks in the surrounding area, giving our word of honour not to escape on this occasion. It's a great improvement physically and morally, and I enjoy it from time to time; the country is also pretty"... He concludes, enthusiastic and resolute: "You have to raise your heart to the height of circumstances that are unique in the history of mankind, but from which our eternal France will emerge hardened and straightened, in the place that is rightfully hers, and I mean the first"... 10 August.
