Lot no. 115
GAULLE Charles de
Copy of a L.A.S., Metz, 14 February 1938, to Paul Reynaud; 2 pages in-4 with printed head of the 507th tank regiment.
Charles de Gaulle sends Paul Reynaud some German articles.
"I am sending you herewith, in translation, the article written in October 1936 in the Militär Wochenblatt by General Heinz Guderian, then commander of the 2nd Panzerdivisionen and currently commander of the Panzetkorps.
If you read this article, you will be able to discern what my state of mind might be, as I see the enemy implementing in full, down to the last detail, and invoking my own patronage, the concepts that I offered in 1933 "to the French Army to serve its faith, its strength and its glory", while in my country the obstinacy of conformism is blocking the road to reform in every way possible.
I am afraid that Messrs Daladier and Guy la Chambre, who last year summarily condemned your plan for an elite armoured corps and the ideas of the "young school", had not read either "Towards a professional army" or the Guderian article, and only know the question through the clouds that are cast over it for their benefit.
Copy of an autograph letter from Charles de Gaulle, the original having not been found.
