GAULLE Charles de.
L. A. (minute with erasures and corrections), 18 November 1950, to General Eugène Mordant; 2 pages in-8 on the letterhead of Le Général de Gaulle.
On Indochina.
General Eugène Mordant (1885-1959) led the French resistance networks in Indochina against Japan.
"My General, your book Au service de la France en Indochine has interested me a great deal and, I might add, moved me quite a bit.
The historical drama in which you were one of the main players and which you endured with lucidity, courage and dignity, reappears under your pen, "without passion" as you write, but not without ardour. Everything fits together. What is happening over there at the moment - and is likely to cost France dearly - is largely the consequence of that cruel past. At least your conscience as a soldier and a leader can rest easy. In this century, that's a lot and it's quite rare!
