Lot no. 299
GAULLE Charles de. L. A. (minute with erasures and corrections), 22 June 1956, to General René BOUSCAT; 3 pages in-8 on General de Gaulle letterhead. Very corrected draft about the reception of his Mémoires de guerre. René Bouscat (1891-1970), an air force general, was appointed Chief of Staff of the French Air Force in 1943. "My dear General, I had indeed been told that the magazine entitled "de défense nationale" had passed over in silence the first volume of my war memoirs. Given the usual inspiration of this periodical, I had found this omission natural and had not attached any importance to it. But, things being what they are, it is essential from now on that the magazine refrains from reporting on my Memoirs or expressing any judgement whatsoever about them. Any mention of them after two years of silence would underline, by the very fact of the delay, the feeling that drives the magazine with regard to what national defence was from the capitulation of June 1940 until the victory of 1945. My formal wish is therefore that it should not talk about it. Since you are a member of its study committee, I would be grateful if you would let it know. It goes without saying, my dear General, that I will, on the contrary, read with great interest your own assessment of the account of events in which you yourself played an eminent and glorious role, as soon as you publish it elsewhere. You will shortly receive the copy of L'Unité intended for you in which I have spoken of you and the Air Force under your command as I think and as I should"... LNC, II, p. 1210.
