Lot no. 208
GAULLE Charles de.
L. A. (minute with erasures and corrections), 26 October 1947, to Maréchale Franchet d'Espèrey; 2 pages in-8 on the letterhead of Le Général de Gaulle.
Provenance: On Marshal Franchet d'Espèrey (on the occasion of his funeral at Les Invalides; he had died in 1942).
"The day before yesterday, I silently paid tribute to Marshal Franchet d'Espèrey with a loyal heart and mind. Circumstances prevented me from appearing in public in Paris to accompany him to his final resting place. But my thoughts were with his glorious memory, as his mortal remains took their place alongside those of Turenne, Napoleon and Foch, and as France evoked his great soul, which has now entered the divine light.
How often I thought of Marshal Franchet d'Espèrey during the recent war, helping myself in my difficult task with the lessons and example he had once given me! Everything fits together. The service of the fatherland is a chain in which all the rings fit together"...
