Lot no. 144
GAULLE Charles de. L. A. S., 11 February 1940, to his friend Étienne Répessé; 2 pages in-4 (slight cracks at folds). Wartime letter, while he was commanding the tanks of the Fifth Army. De Gaulle was then, as he wrote at the top of his letter, in "Command of the Tanks of an Army Sect. 100"; he wrote to his friend Étienne Répessé (1890-1975, writer and director of Berger-Levrault) to ask for news... "Over here, nothing new, as you know. Nothing new around here, as you know. Despite the periodic alarms, I for one am convinced that on our front - for lack of appropriate mechanical means - there will be no major land operations on either side this year". He asked for "a few books", including Le Voyage du Centurion and L'Appel des armes by Ernest Psichari, and "the books by Pourtalès on the great musicians"... LNC, I, p. 918.
