Lot no. 333
GAULLE Charles de. L. A. S., 12 April 1964, to his son Commander Philippe de GAULLE; 1 page and a half in-8 headed Le Général de Gaulle, with autograph envelope signed. Valuable document for organising his political succession, with particular reference to his son. "My dear Philippe, If it should happen that I should pass away soon, without having directly made known whom, in the present circumstances, I wish the French people to elect as my immediate successor as President of the Republic, I entrust you with the task of immediately publishing the attached declaration. I say: my immediate successor, because I hope that you yourself will then be willing and able to take on the task of leading France. Your very affectionate father C. de Gaulle". The envelope reads as follows: "Personal and confidential. 12.4.64. M. le Capitaine de Frégate de Gaulle Enclosed : A letter, A Declaration. If nothing "happens" to me between now and 15 May, keep the letter and return the Declaration to me". [Philippe de Gaulle indicated, when publishing this letter: "This document was returned, unopened, to General de Gaulle, who probably destroyed it"]. LNC, III, p. 637.
