Lot no. 114
GAULLE Charles de. L. A. S., 2 November 1929, to his father Henri de GAULLE; 4 pages in-12 with vignette and Messageries Maritimes letterhead. On the boat taking him to Lebanon. On 18 October, Commandant de Gaulle was placed at the disposal of the general commanding troops in the Levant. "Here we are off Cape Matapan, skirting the entire southern coast of the Peloponnese, while in the distance, to starboard, we can see Crete. The day before yesterday, we made a one-day stopover in Naples. In the morning, Yvonne, myself, Philippe and Elisabeth visited Pompeii, which impressed us greatly. In the afternoon, we visited the Museum of Antiquities and climbed the Pausilippe. Tomorrow morning we'll be in Piraeus and our day will be spent visiting Athens. The TSF tells us that the Tardieu Ministry is being formed. It's Tardieu's turn. Let him take his chances! May this negotiator of the Treaty of Versailles and this pupil of Clemenceau straighten out, both internally and externally, our policy which Briand and his cowardly admirers shamefully denationalised. The mere sight of the sea and of this one makes ideas and hopes clearer and more profound, and we admire Themistocles who had the Agora tribune placed in such a way that speakers always had the Mediterranean in front of them. We have not let yesterday or today pass without thinking of our dead and praying for them. Those of our family bequeath to us the heritage of fidelity, and for my part I am determined to preserve it, whatever turn secular or clerical combinations may take"... LNC, I, p. 723. Attached are 6 visiting cards from Commandant de Gaulle, with the autograph words "pour prendre congé" in pencil, with their envelopes.
