Interesting letter about his Mémoires d'espoir. "My dear Philippe, your festive greetings have given me great pleasure. I thank you for them. I also took great interest in the information your letter gave me about your command. [More than any other of those considered to be of the same order, it embraces the whole and extends, so to speak, beyond itself. It's good that you're the one who has to exercise it. I take all the more satisfaction in seeing your active role expand and grow because mine is over. It remains for me - if I can - to give an account in my Memoirs of what I wanted, tried and, perhaps, partly succeeded in peacetime. The judgement of contemporaries - all of whom were involved in various ways - is of little concern to me. But I believe that what the French of the future think of it, at least the best of them, will be important. In thirteen days' time, I'll be entering my 80th year. Which means that I must make haste, despite the doubts and fatigue of age and hardship. Things are very quiet here, except that the house is in the process of being refurbished (painting, electricity, plasterwork, etc.). As for the family, there's nothing new, apart from Michel Anthonioz's recent wedding. Your aunt Marie-Agnès, who attended, writes that the young bride (American) was very nice and the ceremony (in the Eure) very pleasant.
