Lot no. 167
GAULLE Charles de L. A. S. "C. de Gaulle" to Henri Maillot, 9 November 1970; 1 p. in-12 on General de Gaulle's letterhead, envelope enclosed. One of the very last letters sent by General de Gaulle on the day of his death. "Thank you, my dear cousins, for your kind wishes. We both ask you to believe in our deepest affection. The letter is accompanied by a card from Yvonne de Gaulle, printed in facsimile, on mourning paper: "Thank you for your expression of sympathy, which has touched me deeply". Envelope enclosed. Also enclosed: GAULLE Yvonne de. Card A. S., 3 January [1971]; 3 p. And two lines, on two cards of mourning paper. "My dear cousins, I thanked you very briefly for your expression of sympathy, overwhelmed by an incredible amount of mail. On the day he died, your cousin wrote a note to you, and also to Jules Maillot in Lambersart. Then exactly twelve letters, the eleventh to a neighbouring farmer, the last to our son Philippe (as if he'd had a premonition). I know all this, taking care of giving him the addresses, sending the mail, etc.... The house is quite empty. However, Philippe, Elisabeth and Alain came for Christmas. Henriette, her sons and Anne de Boissieu were 'in the snow'. They have now returned to their jobs and homes. I live in remembrance, but I am also extremely careful not to let anyone minimise or damage my memory. And the children too. I'm sure you'll understand, you faithful people! Happy New Year to you both! Envelope enclosed.
