GAULLE Charles de. L. A. S. "Charles", Aleppo Tuesday [26 November 1929], to his wife Yvonne de GAULLE in Beirut; 3 pages and a half in-8 headed Réunion des officiers d'Alep. Tender letter to his wife during a mission to Syria. "My dear little wife, I shall not be returning to Beirut until next Monday or Tuesday, as I want to complete my military inspection as thoroughly as possible before the rains. Yesterday I drove to Rayak where I took a plane to Aleppo. Arrived in Aleppo in the afternoon. [...] This morning rounds of the troops and services. This afternoon reconnaissance in the direction of Antioch after lunching with General Pichot-Duclos. Tomorrow morning departure for the Euphrates by car. Overnight at Deir-ez-Zor. Thursday Hassenelé and Kamechlié (bed). Friday, visit to Turkish border posts. Saturday and Sunday return via Ras-el-Ain and Tell-Ahiad. Overnight in Aleppo on Sunday evening. Then return to Beirut via Latakia and Tripoli. [...] The people of Aleppo are quite happy with their lot, but they find themselves much campier than those in Beirut. It's cold in the evening and I think it's the same in Beirut. I love you with all my heart. Everyone here asks me: "And Madame de G. wasn't too impressed by this start to the campaign?" I answer the truth i.e. "no" and I think apart from myself that she may have been but that she is so brave and courageous that she pretended to be pleased. And I love her so, so much! I'll never forget how much you supported me at what was a very difficult time"... LNC, I, p. 725.
