GAULLE Charles de.
L. A. S. (minute), Wülzburg bei Weissenburg camp 12 September 1918, to His Excellency the Spanish Ambassador in Berlin; 1 page and a half large in-4.
Very interesting letter asking the Spanish ambassador in Berlin to enforce his sentence immediately.
[It should be noted that it was up to the Spanish ambassador (a neutral country) in Berlin to look after the interests of French nationals in enemy hands. The sentence referred to was for an "insult" made to German gendarmes when he was arrested after his escape in November 1917. One might think that his haste to have his conviction enforced was due to his fear, should it come to that, of not being able to be among the officers selected for a prisoner exchange if it was still pending. This approach to the Spanish ambassador seems to have borne fruit, as the letter to his mother dated 30 September 1918 is addressed from Magdeburg].
"I have the honour of calling Your Excellency's attention to the following facts:
The Ingolstadt War Council sentenced me on 18 April last to 14 days in prison. The sentence related to an incident that occurred on 23 November 1917.
Your Excellency will please note, in passing, that it took the German authorities five months to complete an investigation limited to the written testimony of a single witness and my own interrogation. Once the judgement had been handed down at first instance, I decided not to appeal, particularly with the intention of getting the sentence over with as soon as possible.
As of today, those two weeks in prison have still not been served... I have made several requests to the German authorities in this regard: they have had no result.
The Berne Agreement of 26 April 1918 states (Article 34): "[...] Convicted prisoners will be transferred immediately to a special camp", etc. A special camp has, moreover, already been set up. A special camp has, moreover, been set up for this purpose at Magdeburg. [...]
Your Excellency will allow me to expect from his kindness: 1° that the Spanish embassy in Berlin will seek to obtain from the German authorities that they will not wait to carry out my punishment"... Etc.
LNC, I, p. 423-424.
Attached is an autograph draft of a letter in German, requesting that this letter be sent to the ambassador (1 1/2 pages in-8 in pencil).
