GAULLE Charles de. L. A. S. "Your husband C.", [Cairo] 2 July 1941, to his wife Yvonne de Gaulle (in Ellesmere); 2 pages in-4 headed Le Général de Gaulle. Letter from Cairo, during his tour of the Orient. He wrote to his "dear little wife [...] in the midst of the decisive ordeal. Painful as it was, it was necessary and I believe that the end is now in sight. But what a drama! [...] In any case, everything is going as well as it can. But you need a soul of iron, so cruel are the events and so heavy the responsibilities"... He received "a magnificent photo of the Joan of Arc parade in London, with Philippe in the front row of the École Navale! I think a lot of him, as I do of my daughter Elisabeth and the little one". He does not know when he will be able to return to London, "perhaps in a few weeks". He added: "Nothing is astonishing and comforting as the spirit, the ardour and the courage of all our people here, military and civilian. The nuns are the most Gaullist! LNC, I, p. 1241.
