He wrote to his "dear Papa" and began by mentioning, without saying so, his escape on 7 July, for which he was caught three days later. This attempt led to 120 days' imprisonment, which was finally cut short by the Armistice: "I'm a little late in sending you my warmest and best wishes for a happy holiday. But when, one day, you know why, I'm sure you'll excuse me...". Then, after noting the hope of the French people, he explained the moral support he had and which enabled him to hold out: "First of all, my dearest Papa, it is the example you never forgot that you set for your sons at the beginning of your life, by fighting with honour the same enemy that they are now fighting in their turn. It's the invaluable lessons you taught me throughout my childhood on this subject and on everything related to it. It is also the thought that never leaves me to remain, even here, worthy of you and of my dear Mother; worthy of the esteem of my valiant and glorious brothers. Finally, I am deeply proud of belonging, in the past and in the future, to the admirable French army, against which nothing can prevail, an imperishable model of courage, the science of combat and the will to win.
