GAULLE Charles de L.A.S., 11 September 1962, to Paul Reynaud; 1 1/2 pages in-8 on printed letterhead Le Général de Gaulle. After the Petit-Clamart attack. De Gaulle was the target of a failed attempt on his life at Petit-Clamart on 22 August 1962, fomented by the OAS. He received the support of Paul Reynaud during this ordeal. On 12 September 1962, this event prompted him to change the way the President of the Republic was appointed: he would henceforth be elected by direct universal suffrage. This proposal would be put to the French people in a referendum. "How sensitive my wife and I have been to your thoughts and concern! As for the regime, in short for the Republic, I hope and believe that once its enemies have knocked down the obstacle that I could be, they would in any case have found many others in front of them.
