De Gaulle was the target of a failed attempt on his life at Petit-Clamart on 22 August 1962, fomented by the OAS. He received the support of Paul Reynaud during this ordeal. On 12 September 1962, this event prompted him to change the way the President of the Republic was appointed: he would henceforth be elected by direct universal suffrage. This proposal would be put to the French people in a referendum. "How sensitive my wife and I have been to your thoughts and concern!
