Although I may have been somewhat offended by his political attitude in recent years, my extreme regard for his exceptional worth was in no way affected. Above all, I remained and still remain faithful to the friendship and esteem that united us both in the prodromal stages and then in the ordeal of the greatest tragedy in our history, in which we had to bear the supreme responsibilities one after the other. I cannot forget how much this friendship and esteem have counted in my own destiny.
