GAULLE Charles de. L.A.S. L. A. S. (minute), 1 August 1947, to Paul Reynaud; 2 pages in-8 on the letterhead of Le Général de Gaulle. Commentary on Paul Reynaud's book on the days of June 1940. "Even before I opened : La France a sauvé l'Europe, I knew it would be of unspeakable interest. In this respect, my reading exceeded my expectations. As far as your action is concerned, so clear-sighted and so courageous, before and during the storm up to the great drama of mid-June 1940, you know that I have always approved of it, to the point of associating myself with it to the extent of my means. This means that, apart from a few details, I still agree with what you say. [You will allow me, however, to add that my exceptional esteem for your worth and my loyal friendship for you have remained as they were. LNC, II, p. 820. Attached is Paul Reynaud's L. S. in reply, 5 August 1947 (1 1/2 pages in-4 on Assemblée nationale letterhead). He thanks the General for his letter: "The work done together, for the public good, with a man who has since carved out such a place for himself in the history of France is a shining point in my career. [As for the armistice, history will tell whether, in the face of the hostility of the most important ministers in my cabinet, a reshuffle was not necessary to avoid resignations that would have morally torn apart invaded France". And he recalled that there had never been any question of an armistice between them...
