"I am enclosing a study that I once did under the personal direction of Marshal Pétain, on the history of French military institutions (Ancien Régime, Revolution, Empire, 1815 to 1871). Until now, this study had remained a matter between the Marshal and myself. If you would like to read it, I hope you will find a fairly complete philosophy of this serious question. Marshal Pétain's publication project, which was to be entitled Le Soldta, never saw the light of day and was the cause of the final rift between the two men.
