GAULLE Charles de L.A.S., Paris, 14 December 1936, 2 pages in-4. Charles de Gaulle discusses his career in the Army. "I am enclosing a list of the three wounds and five commendations (including four in the Army Order) that yours truly earned on the battlefields. You may find that, in speaking as he did of my war service, M. Daladier was only vaguely familiar with it. No doubt those who gave him information on the subject listened to their 'theological' passion rather than to strict fairness. To be edified, the Minister would only have to be shown my file. Moreover, since 1933, the year I was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel, neither my comrades nor I have had to fight in the war. So it is not their war service that could justify the preference given to officers who, until 1933, had been deemed to come after me. The simple truth is that, since 1933, the ideas you know and the events that confirm them have come to light. Some people would find it a good idea to stifle ideas by strangling the protagonist. This mediocre affair is only important insofar as it is an episode in the great battle for military renewal, a battle that you, Minister, have had the intelligence and courage to want to lead, a battle that you will win - I am sure - for the salvation of the country." Slight folds on the right-hand side and a small trace of a nail without affecting the text. Bibliography: L. N. C., vol. 1, p. 826-827.
