GAULLE Charles de
L.A.S., Paris, 16 December 1935, to Paul Reynaud; 4 pages in-8 on the printed letterhead of the Presidency of the Conseil Supérieur de la Défense Nationale. With envelope.
Speech by Paul Reynaud on the inclusion of Charles de Gaulle in the roll of honour.
"On reflection, I don't see why I shouldn't accept the offer to speak that you have kindly made me. Allow me, Minister, to explain the conditions in which I find myself. As a Lieutenant-Colonel from 25 December 1933, I would need a specific decision from the Minister of War to be included on the roll. Decisions of this nature were taken last year in favour of six officers and, two years ago, in favour of eight officers with equal or less seniority than mine (at present). On the other hand, several of these officers were, in terms of age, in the very conditions in which I find myself this year.
In case you think it appropriate to do something, Minister, let me tell you that this is a matter of extreme urgency. I would add, quite simply, that a personal and oral approach from you to the Minister of War would certainly have more effect than a letter, which, moreover, would go to the Services and remain there.
Now, it cannot have escaped you, Minister, that the interest you have publicly shown in certain ideas of military reform has aroused the attention of some, even a little discontent (which is only human) towards my modest character".
