Lot no. 97
GAULLE Charles de L.A.S., Paris, 20 November 1936, to Paul Reynaud; 2 pages in-4. Remarkable letter in which he expresses his intuition that a German coup d'état is imminent. "I draw your attention to the "sensational" investigation launched by Le Petit Journal: "Sommes-nous défendus? I am sending you Mr Paul-Boncour's statements, which are entirely favourable to our thesis from the point of view of the left. It might be a good idea to get Mr Patenôtre himself to explicitly agree with us. No doubt you have the means to suggest this to him. If he decides to do so, and although I don't know him, I would be happy to provide him with any clarifications that might be useful to him; all under a guarantee of total and reciprocal discretion, of course. I am convinced that we are on the eve of a German coup. This time, Hitler is going to play us from the sidelines. Supported by Italy and Japan, and seizing the Spanish-Catalan pretext, he seems to me to be on the point of creating an incident from which France must, in his mind, emerge humiliated, Russia furious with us and the Paris-Moscow pact ridiculed. And yet! He is bluffing! He is not ready to go to war today. With us, unity and action would soon calm him down. Alas, we are turning our backs on common sense. Tiny crease on the upper right-hand side, paperclip mark without affecting the text and two tiny holes on the sides. Bibliography: L. N. C., vol. 1, p. 824-825.
