Lot no. 108
GAULLE Charles de L.A.S., Paris, 23 July 1937, to Paul Reynaud; 3 1/2 pages in-4. Remarks on an article concerning Le Problème militaire français. "General Duchêne's intention (and that of those who directed his pen) is certainly not to approve of you... But it is a fact that his article confirms exactly what you wrote in "Le Problème militaire français". It results from General Duchêne's proposals: 1. That our current military system does not allow us to undertake anything without mobilising. 2. That this weakness at least contributed to our government's retreat on 7 March 1936, while it provoked Hitler to boldness. 3. That this weakness has become like a strategic doctrine, since General Duchêne invokes the so-called "principles" to forbid us any military undertaking until all our national forces are united. 4. That, under these conditions, a policy which allows others (Belgium in particular) to "intervene effectively and rapidly" at a time of sudden attack leads us straight into humiliations in which the honour of France risks sinking. So let's change our policy, or else let's change our military system. I'm currently in Versailles studying the new tanks, while waiting to take command (on 5 September) of the 507th tank regiment in Metz. But what spare time I have is yours. Injections. Bibliography: L. N. C., vol. 1, p. 834-835.
