GAULLE Charles de L.A.S., Paris, 30 January 1937, to Paul Reynaud; 2 1/2 pages in-4. Remarks on the direction to be given to our military policy. "So much so that M. Daladier felt obliged to make a statement at the time, which was very interesting, not so much because of the arguments (which you know and which are not repeated) as because this statement foreshadowed the Minister's imminent speech. I don't know whether you intend to say a few more words on Tuesday (explanation of vote?...) after Mr. Daladier's speech. If so, it seems to me that there are three conclusions to be drawn from the whole parliamentary debate: 1. Everyone agrees that the French force should be increased and that it should be increased in terms of quality (equipment and personnel). 2. The concerns of all the speakers focused almost exclusively on those parts of our forces which are both the most powerful and the most specialised (Air Force, Mechanical Corps, Fortifications, Navy). This is a sign of the times and evidence of an evolution. 3. Let's not fight over words or prejudices from another age. And since it is a fact that the relative importance of certain elements is increasing rapidly every day, let's give these elements the greatest possible value so that they form an assured, constant and immediate "cover" for the armed nation. This is the direction to be given to our military policy, drawn by the force of circumstances and by the unanimous feeling of the country's representatives. Traces of paperclips without affecting the text. Bibliography: L. N. C., vol. 1, p. 830-831.
