Lot no. 121
GAULLE Charles de.
Autograph manuscript, [Combats du "Temps de paix", 1932]; 32 pages fol.
Complete manuscript of this chronicle of fighting by French troops in the Levant.
The article Combats du "Temps de paix" ("Peacetime battles") was published in the Revue d'Infanterie on 1st May 1932; it is an extension of the Histoire des troupes du Levant ("History of Levant troops"), written in 1931 in collaboration with Major Louis Yvon. It has been collected in Articles et écrits, p. 237- 262.
The manuscript, which has been extensively crossed out and corrected, comprises an introduction and four chapters:
[Introduction] (6 p.) " Once again, weapons have reshaped the face of the world. Resurrected or mutilated, enlarged or reduced, peoples owe their fate to the fortunes of battle"... De Gaulle wanted to celebrate the efforts of the soldiers sent away from France "to guard beyond the seas the territories for which it is responsible", by recounting a few episodes from the Syrian campaigns.
I Aïn-Tab (11 p.). A note at the head (1 p. in-12) states: "The accounts that follow are taken, for the most part, from official documents or recollections written by the very actors of the events reported". The story begins as follows: "The Great War has just ended. [...] It was then that a few soldiers were leading the most thankless campaign in Cilicia"...
De Gaulle recounts the battle for Aïn-Tab, which lasted more than a year, from February 1920 to spring 1921. The typescript, with a few autograph annotations and corrections, is attached (11 p.).
II Kafer (5 p.): "On 20 July 1925, a small troop left the citadel at Soueida and headed south. For several days, there has been intense agitation in Jebel Druze"... The corrected typescript is attached (4 p.).
III Rachaya (7 p.): "In the autumn of 1925, the whole of Syria was in turmoil. The insurrection began in Jebel Druze with the massacre of the Normand detachment on 20 July and the capture of the Souieda citadel"... The corrected typescript is attached (8 p.).
IV Aéré (3 p.): "In April 1926, the command undertook a decisive effort in Jebel Druze, which had been insurgent for nine months"...
Attached is a typescript, La guerre au Levant (juillet-décembre 1925) (6 fol. pages with a few corrections and a small annotated plan at the end, possibly by Louis Yvon).
