Lot no. 1
GAULLE Charles de. Autograph manuscript, Origines de notre famille; 3 pages small in-4. Genealogical sketch, written around 1935, according to a note by Admiral Philippe de Gaulle. "For the time being, we can only establish absolutely certain and authentic filiation (civil status records, extracts from parish registers) from the end of the 17th century. In 1713 Antoine de Gaulle (his name is spelt Gaulle and Gaule in the same record), widower of Marie Buat, married Anne Regnault for the second time in Châlons sur Marne. He has from this marriage : Jean-Baptiste De Gaulle born in 1720 Prosecutor at the Parliament of Paris died in 1798. Jean-Baptiste's son Philippe De Gaulle was born in 1756 a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, and from 1812 was attached to the Post Office of the Grande Armée [...]. The de Gaulles appeared in Champagne at the end of the seventeenth century, at a time when they were no longer to be found in Burgundy; there is a gap of about 30 years between the appearance of some and the disappearance of others, but there is an absolute similarity of name (and I am not aware that this name was borne in other provinces)"... Etc. De Gaulle adds at the end of this note: "According to my father's note in response to questions from Mr Bernizet, a teacher at the lycée in Gap". Philippe de Gaulle wrote in pencil: "Mon Père s'est trompé" ("My father made a mistake"), and he himself drew up a genealogy on the 4th page. Enclosed is an envelope bearing this autograph note from General de Gaulle: "Copies of Civil Status records concerning my family. C. de Gaulle". Small grease stains on the back of the envelope.
