Lot no. 17
GAULLE Charles de.
Autograph manuscript signed "Charles de Lugale", Le couvent thibétain, [ca. 1910]; 2 1/2 pages in-8, with erasures and corrections; incomplete (pp. 1-2 and 10).
Unpublished short story from his youth.
The narrator meets his friend "Captain Wolfton of the English India Army", and is astonished to see that his hair has turned white. The captain then recounts an adventure that occurred during a mission to Tchang-la-tsé in Thibet; suffering from a fever, he goes to stay in an abandoned Buddhist convent... The end evokes an "old monk, the last survivor of an extinct order, and who, already half-sated by death, came out of the mummy niche where he had placed himself to await it, in order to punish the foreign violator of his convent"...
