A young officer in the colonial army falls in love with the beautiful Zalaïna, the daughter of a sorcerer. The officer narrowly escapes death, to which Zalaïna succumbs: she had brought poisonous flowers, hoping that their two souls would "join the ancestors and live together eternally"... LNC, I, p.47.
