General de Gaulle's wishes for his funeral. This manuscript, numbered at the top "Ex. N° 3", is accompanied by its envelope: "For my funeral. C.G. Done on 16 January 1952". De Gaulle wrote this "testament" in three copies: No. 1 was for Georges Pompidou, his chief of staff, No. 2 for his daughter Elisabeth, and No. 3 for his son Philippe. "I want my funeral to take place in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises. If I die elsewhere, my body will have to be transported home, without the slightest public ceremony. My grave will be the one where my daughter Anne already rests and where, one day, my wife will rest. Inscription: Charles de Gaulle (1890-...). Nothing else. The ceremony will be organised by my son, my daughter, my son-in-law and my daughter-in-law, with the help of my Cabinet, in such a way that it will be extremely simple. I don't want a state funeral. No president, no ministers, no offices of assemblies, no constituted bodies. Only the French Armed Forces will be able to participate officially, as such; but their participation will have to be on a very modest scale, without music, fanfares or bells. No speeches should be made, either in church or elsewhere. No funeral orations in Parliament. No place will be reserved during the ceremony, except for my family, my Companions, members of the Order of the Liberation, and the Colombey Town Council. Men and women from France and other countries around the world may, if they wish, do my memory the honour of accompanying my body to its final resting place. But it is in silence that I wish it to be taken. I declare that I refuse in advance any distinction, promotion, dignity, citation or decoration, whether French or foreign.
