GAULLE Charles de.
Autograph manuscripts for La Discorde chez l'ennemi, [1924] ; 106 pages fol.
Important set of drafts for his first book, analysing Germany's defeat in 1914-1918.
Charles de Gaulle's first book, La Discorde chez l'ennemi, was published in March 1924 by Berger-Levrault. In five chapters, he analysed the causes of Germany's defeat in 1918. These drafts, in black ink, are heavily crossed out and corrected, with large passages crossed out and variations from the final text.
The file includes the following drafts:
* Foreword] (2 pages folio): "The German defeat should not prevent French opinion from paying our enemies the tribute they have deserved through the energy of their leaders and the efforts of their executors"... On the back of the 2nd page, de Gaulle has drawn up the outline of the book: "1) The disobedience of Gal von Kluck. 2) The outbreak of the submarine war. 3) [Command crossed out] 4) The fall of Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg. 2) The outbreak of the submarine war. 3) [Command strikethrough] 4) The fall of Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg.
5) The rout of the German people.
* I The disobedience of General von Kluck]. (18 pages folio)". Returning to Berlin emperor and victorious, William I, receiving in the name of Germany the congratulations of his subjects, said in public: 'You, Moltke, thanks to your peacetime toil and your wartime methods, you have led our armies to victory'"... The conclusion has remained unpublished: "In the recent war of the peoples, France has finally snatched Victory. Let her now glorify her triumph and celebrate her laurels. But let her not make the mistake, under the pretext of success, of allowing her methods to become petrified. Her soldiers will not be intoxicated by their glories.
* II La déclaration de guerre sous-marine renforcée], here entitled La fatale querelle d'un Chancelier et d'un Amiral, and dated "Novembre 1922". (title and 40 pages in-fol. pag. [3]-3-33 with added ff.). "Given that the proclamation of an unrestricted submarine blockade was bound to have the most serious external consequences, there is no doubt that in this matter the decision should logically have fallen to the Chancellor of the Empire, head of government, exercising the political conduct of the war"... The conclusion remains unpublished: "Enlightened French opinion will not fail to draw useful conclusions from these recent and formidable lessons. In the light of these events, thoughtful minds will be able to clarify and complete within themselves that superior philosophy of war without which the hardest efforts of a people can be ruined, but which, known and practised, constitutes the most general and surest guarantee of the destiny of the fatherland".
* III Relations with the Allies] (46 pages folio). The beginning is unpublished: "The passions and interests of the peoples of Europe have long been so entangled that almost all modern wars fought on the soil of the old continent have been wars of coalition. There is a general and practical interest in studying the procedures applied by groups of powers to ensure the coordination of their efforts"... The last page, heavily crossed out, gives a conclusion that has not yet been published: "By noting the inability of the Central Powers to regulate by good agreement the necessary collaboration of armies fighting on the same battlefields, and to establish a single authority over the forces of their coalition, public opinion will undoubtedly even threaten the merit of the French military leaders who, in infinitely more difficult circumstances, were constantly able to achieve this collaboration and finally obtain this authority. Our officers, convinced that a new war would undoubtedly place allied armies alongside our own, will not neglect these studies of recent history, an incomparable preparation for the duties that a future may inspire in them".
Plus the following typescripts:
* Conclusion, first, shorter version of the Foreword (1 p.), with one corrected word.
