GAULLE Charles de. P.A. and L.A., 5 June 1957, to Maître Michel CARLINI in Marseille; 2 pages in-4. Refusal of the transfer of the ashes of Pétain. Michel Carlini (1889-1967), a lawyer, was mayor of Marseille from 1947 to 1953, and elected R. P. F. deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône in 1951. The note was written in the margin of 2 press cuttings from Le Méridional dated 16 and 23 May 1957, reporting a meeting of the Association des Anciens Combattants de Verdun, chaired by Mr Carlini, at which it was announced that General de Gaulle had accepted the idea of transferring Marshal Pétain's body to the Douaumont ossuary. De Gaulle wrote: "It's not true! I never said that and I am totally opposed to this "transfer!" - Make me write to Carlini that I never said what he would have me say". On 5 June 1957, on the margin of the typed draft of the letter to Mr Carlini, de Gaulle wrote a new version of the letter in his own handwriting: "I have been sent a clipping from Le Méridional, relating certain remarks that are said to have been made about the 'ashes of the Marshal' and that I never thought or said! As this newspaper associates your name with this story, I'd be delighted if you could tell me what is really going on. I hope to see you soon, and please accept, my dear Carlini, my warmest regards. LNC, II, p. 1248. An L. A. S. from Michel Carlini to General de Gaulle, Cap-Corse 13 September 1950, about the visit to Marseille of Gaston Defferre, Minister for the Merchant Navy, and Carlini's refusal to receive him at the Town Hall (2 p. in-4). Plus autograph draft of General de Gaulle's reply telegram: "Obviously you must refuse. I repeat refuse" (1 p. in-8 on his letterhead).
