Lot no. 20
GAULLE Charles de.
circa 1910.
Notebook of drawings.
In-8 oblong (12.7 x 21 cm), bradel grey cloth, closed with an elastic band, with pencil holder on top edge.
The notebook, executed around 1901, while Charles de Gaulle was at Saint-Cyr (around 1910), contains 4 pencil drawings:
- river landscape with a church on the edge of a wood and buildings (fortifications?) in the foreground,
- village probably fortified (with chapel and keep) in a plain landscape,
- dwellings at the foot of a hill, with a surrounding wall,
- village with factory (large chimney), in a plain landscape.
The notebook was featured in the BnF exhibition "Charles de Gaulle, la conquête de l'histoire" (1990), under no. 30, with the first drawing reproduced in the catalogue.
This is a touching testimony to Charles de Gaulle's formative years, when he was interested in the arts, literature and military art. As far as we know, this is the only record of his draughtsmanship, apart from sketches for his escapes and military studies.
