Lot no. 169
GAULLE Yvonne de and others
Set of C. A. S. to Henri Maillot and his wife; 1 p. in-12 on General de Gaulle's letterhead, envelopes enclosed.
Important collection of signed autograph cards from Yvonne de Gaulle to her cousins Henri and Marie Maillot.
The cards are mainly thank-yous for greetings and delicious oranges, and quick replies to news (from all over the world) from Henri Maillot and his wife, but they also show the ties that bind the various members of the family: "I am happy to announce the birth of my first great-grandchild : Henri" (5 March 1979), "From my brother Jacques Vendroux I learn that you have just had an operation. [...] As far as I'm concerned, I'm getting old... 9 November was particularly painful for me. [...] Alain de Boissieu is retiring in 6 months' time" (13 December 1974), "As for me, I've aged a lot since Charles died" (no date).
In October 1978, Yvonne de Gaulle announced her new address: "Having been unable to find a suitable replacement for my faithful Charlotte, who has been obliged to retire, I have decided to become a lady boarder with the nuns, where the mother of my son-in-law and a friend are already living. It was not without regret that I left Colombey...".
Having learned in February 1966 of her cousin's convalescence, she announced her visit "but completely incognito if you can wait for me in the downstairs sitting room, that would be preferable".
