First edition of Théophile Gautier's masterpiece. This famous collection of poems went through six successive editions between 1852 and 1872. However, only "the first edition is very rare" (Carteret). It contains eighteen poems. A precious copy given by the author to the painter Auguste de Châtillon with this autograph signed letter: To my old friend A. de Châtillon, Théophile Gautier. Painter, sculptor and poet, Auguste de Châtillon (1808-1881) was a close friend of Gautier and Nerval from the time of the bohemian Doyenné, still evoked in 1853 in Nerval's Petits châteaux de Bohème. He is the author of a famous portrait of Gautier, painted in 1839 (kept at the Musée de la Vie romantique). Autograph correction in pencil to the last line of Inès de Las Sierras. A reprint of Jules Janin's first novel, "a sort of bizarre novel accumulating horrors with pleasure" (Carteret), originally published in 1829, has been bound at the head of the copy.
