Geneviève Asse discovers the still life paintings by Chardin at the Louvre in the late 30s and for decades, he would remain a major influence on her. In quiet, subdued tones, Asse’s still lifes and landscapes would over the years evolve towards pure abstraction. Mainly known for her monochrome paintings, sometimes marked by a line, suggesting an opening or a horizon, in a distinctive blue which became her trademark, these works can be retraced to her memories from Brittany, where she spent her childhood.
